Netball Hosting Rights: Seven Questions for the NDP

St. Vincent and the Grenadines lost its netball hosting rights for the 2026 Americas Netball World Cup qualifiers, even as the Vincy Jewels went on to earn a coveted place at the 2027 World Cup. The outcome raises an uncomfortable question for the government of Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday: Why did Vincentians have to compete in Barbados for a tournament SVG had originally won the right to host?

Records confirm that SVG was awarded hosting rights under the former Unity Labour Party administration in October 2025. The new NDP Cabinet formally withdrew in February 2026, citing insufficient time to meet the required competition standards. Barbados subsequently stepped in, where the Vincy Jewels secured qualification for Sydney 2027.

How SVG Won the Netball Hosting Rights in 2025

On October 29, 2025, members of Americas Netball awarded St. Vincent and the Grenadines the right to host the 2026 Americas Netball World Cup Qualifier. The event was originally scheduled for October 13–23, 2026.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association President Natasha Baptiste welcomed the opportunity for sports tourism and for the Vincy Jewels to play before home supporters. An important part of the successful bid was a written undertaking from the then ULP government to transform the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex into an indoor competition venue.

That undertaking was a promise to build, however, not evidence that the facility had been completed. Winning netball hosting rights was one thing; delivering the promised facility was another. The project remained unfinished when the NDP took office following the November 27, 2025, general election.

Why the NDP Cabinet Gave Up Netball Hosting Rights

On February 5, 2026, Sports Minister Kaschaka Cupid informed the Netball Association that Cabinet had decided not to proceed with hosting the tournament. The ministry issued a formal statement on February 7, saying the time available was inadequate for the necessary court and infrastructure upgrades to meet international standards without compromising quality or safety.

Prime Minister Friday defended the decision at a March 3 press conference. He maintained that the required facilities were unavailable and that early withdrawal would allow organizers to make alternative arrangements rather than risk a late cancellation. He described the construction timetable as a challenge inherited by his administration.

Safety and compliance are legitimate considerations. No responsible government should host an international competition in an unsuitable facility. But that does not, by itself, settle whether relinquishing the netball hosting rights was the only reasonable option after the country had secured them.

Gonsalves Urged a Reversal

Opposition Leader Dr. Ralph Gonsalves publicly opposed the decision. In remarks reported by iWitness News on February 11, he argued that the new administration should honor the commitment made to the Netball Association.

Gonsalves said his former administration had considered several options for Arnos Vale, selected an approach involving a steel-framed covered facility, and intended to begin work after the election had the ULP remained in office. He also maintained that resources had been identified and estimated associated construction and support works at approximately EC$5 million to EC$6 million.

Those assertions should be tested against procurement documents, engineering assessments, budget records and an actual construction schedule. They do not establish that completion by October was guaranteed. Equally, the NDP’s explanation has not been accompanied in the public record reviewed by VINCYPOWA News by the full technical assessment on which Cabinet relied.

Barbados Gains the Netball Hosting Rights

Barbados subsequently assumed hosting responsibility. The competition was held October 19–26 at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, with eight national teams taking part. The Barbados Netball Association described the opportunity as beneficial for its sporting calendar and its home team.

The tournament brought participating squads, officials and attention to Barbados. The precise direct economic value that SVG might have gained has not been independently established, and it would be misleading to attach an unsupported revenue estimate. Nonetheless, when the netball hosting rights shifted to Barbados, SVG lost an opportunity for international exposure and home-court advantage.

The Questions That Remain Unanswered

First: Will the government publish the full technical report used to justify Cabinet’s withdrawal?

Second: Was a supplier formally selected under the previous administration, and what contractual or financial commitments, if any, existed when the NDP assumed office?

Third: What was the independently verified cost and timeline for a compliant indoor facility at Arnos Vale?

Fourth: Did Cabinet assess accelerated construction, temporary covered facilities or alternative venues before withdrawing?

Fifth: Were any penalties, sanctions or additional costs imposed on SVG or its Netball Association because of the withdrawal?

Sixth: What hosting-related tourism and commercial opportunities were assessed, and was that analysis considered in the decision?

Seventh: What funded plan now exists to deliver a modern indoor sports facility for netball and other disciplines, and when will athletes see it completed?

The Athletes Delivered. Now the Leaders Must Account.

There are responsibilities on both sides of the political divide. The ULP administration must explain whether its original commitment was financially and technically ready to execute. The NDP administration must explain why it decided against proceeding and whether credible alternatives were fully considered. Both must account for how the netball hosting rights were obtained, managed and ultimately given up.

The Vincy Jewels did their part. They overcame a difficult draw, defeated Barbados on its home court, and went on to secure a place in Sydney. Their achievement deserves celebration without qualification.

But sporting success does not erase the public’s right to know what happened to the opportunity to host these qualifiers.

The Vincy Jewels delivered their result in Barbados. The government must now explain what happened to the facility intended to bring the tournament to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
