Jalen Brunson added 23 points and seven assists as New York improved to 1–3 after three frustrating defeats. Detroit, which arrived with a 3–0 record, suffered its first loss of the young season.
A 13-point deficit becomes a 25-point lead
The evening began badly for New York. Detroit piled up 38 first-quarter points and led 38–25 at the first break. But the Knicks tightened their defense in the second period, holding the Pistons to 12 points while scoring 26 of their own to take a 51–50 halftime lead.
Then came the game’s defining stretch. The Knicks overwhelmed Detroit 37–13 in the third quarter, turning a one-point halftime edge into an 88–63 advantage entering the fourth. The Pistons scored 34 points over the final 12 minutes, but the deficit was too large to erase.
Towns leads the Knicks’ first win
Towns was the centerpiece of the turnaround, combining his 27 points with a commanding 20-rebound performance. Brunson supplied the scoring and playmaking support New York needed, finishing with 23 points and seven assists.
OG Anunoby and Landry Shamet scored 13 points apiece. Shamet connected on three three-pointers, while Mikal Bridges added 12 points on four shots from beyond the arc. Andre Drummond contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
For Detroit, Paul Reed scored 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Cade Cunningham finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
Defensive turnaround powers the Knicks’ first win
Detroit managed just 25 combined points in the second and third quarters, a striking reversal after its explosive first period. New York recorded 28 assists and won the overall rebounding battle 62–54. The Pistons made 24.3% of their three-point attempts.
The Knicks still committed 18 turnovers and allowed a 34-point Detroit fourth quarter. Those numbers suggest there is work to do before New York can consider its early-season problems solved.
The victory nevertheless restores some momentum after an 0–3 start that included an opening-night 106–100 defeat to Philadelphia on championship banner night. As defending champions, the Knicks are facing higher expectations and little patience for prolonged slumps.
What comes next
After the Knicks’ first win, New York travels to Chicago to face the Bulls on Wednesday, October 28. The Knicks will look to build on the defensive intensity that fueled their comeback against Detroit.
One win does not decide a season, but the Knicks have finally given their supporters a reason to celebrate. The defending champions are on the board.
