NEW YORK, October 20, 2026. The New York Knicks raised their first NBA championship banner in 53 years on Tuesday, but their title defense opened with a 106-100 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden. Tyrese Maxey scored a game-high 28 points as Philadelphia spoiled New York’s ring-night celebration.
The Knicks received their championship rings and celebrated the title they won in June, but the 76ers’ rebuilt lineup, featuring new arrivals LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, showed that New York faces an immediate challenge in the Eastern Conference. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Philadelphia held New York to 37 percent shooting from the field.
New York Knicks Struggle as 76ers Take Control in Third Quarter
New York led 25-23 after the first quarter and 58-54 at halftime, supported by an energetic bench and strong work on the boards from Andre Drummond. The Knicks’ offense then stalled in the third period as Philadelphia tightened its defense.
The 76ers outscored New York 29-18 in the third quarter to turn a four-point halftime deficit into an 83-76 lead. Philadelphia ended the period on a 14-2 run, capped by Brown’s difficult three-pointer at the buzzer. The Knicks shot just 5-of-21 in the quarter, according to amNewYork’s game report.
New York fought back several times in the fourth. Karl-Anthony Towns cut the deficit to 96-95 with a three-pointer, and another Towns three later brought the Knicks within two points. But missed shots and a costly late turnover prevented the home team from completing the comeback.

Brunson Scores 21, but Knicks Struggle to Shoot
Jalen Brunson led New York with 21 points, but made only six of his 19 field-goal attempts. With the Knicks still within striking distance in the closing seconds, a late Brunson three-pointer missed badly, ending one of their final chances.
Towns finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Drummond provided a powerful lift off the bench in his New York Knicks debut, contributing 12 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. The veteran center helped stabilize the team after Towns encountered foul trouble.
OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges had difficult shooting performances. Philadelphia’s ability to pressure New York’s main offensive creators proved decisive, even though the Knicks remained within reach until late in the contest.
Maxey Leads Philadelphia; LeBron James and Jaylen Brown Debut
Maxey finished with 28 points and added five assists and three steals. His speed and scoring repeatedly stretched the Knicks’ defense, while his late steal helped protect Philadelphia’s lead.
Brown supplied 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists in his first regular-season game for Philadelphia. James, beginning his 24th NBA season, posted 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in his 76ers debut. The newcomers had uneven stretches offensively, but both contributed important plays as the visitors took control.
Joel Embiid recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three blocks. Philadelphia’s combined defensive effort was particularly important against Brunson, the reigning NBA Finals MVP. The Inquirer’s postgame account also highlighted the Sixers’ pressure on the Knicks’ guards.
Banner-Raising Joy Gives Way to a Reality Check
Before the game, Madison Square Garden celebrated a championship won against San Antonio in June. New York’s dramatic postseason run delivered the franchise’s first NBA title since 1973, making the opening-night ring ceremony a landmark occasion.
The loss does not undo that achievement, nor does one regular-season game decide the championship race. But it showed how much the competition has changed. Philadelphia entered the season with a deeper star group after adding James and Brown, and its opening-night defense provided an immediate test of the New York Knicks’ ability to repeat.
What Comes Next for the New York Knicks?
The Knicks will try to respond when they visit the Boston Celtics on Friday, October 23. Philadelphia, meanwhile, hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday.
New York must improve its shooting and late-game execution, especially when opponents force Brunson into difficult attempts. There were positives in the bench’s energy and Drummond’s debut, but championship aspirations will require a more dependable offensive performance against leading Eastern Conference teams.
Vincypowa News previously reported on the Knicks’ final roster decisions before opening night. The season will now test the depth and adaptability of that group.
The championship banner hangs above the Garden. On the court, the work of defending it has only begun.
