Spain are champions of the world for the second time. Ferran Torres, sent on as a substitute, drove home from close range in the 106th minute at New York New Jersey Stadium to beat Argentina 1-0 and end a final that Spain had controlled almost from the opening whistle without ever being able to break it open.
The goal came 39 seconds into the second half of extra time, and it arrived against ten men. Enzo Fernández had been dismissed in second-half stoppage time for a second bookable offence, leaving Argentina to defend for more than half an hour with a defensive block and a goalkeeper in remarkable form. Emiliano Martínez, the hero of Lusail in 2022, kept the scoreline blank through repeated Spanish waves before Torres finally found the finish that mattered.
Luis de la Fuente’s side finished the night having taken 20 shots to Argentina’s two. Argentina did not register a single attempt on target across 120 minutes. The expected goals count told the same story from a different angle: 1.94 for Spain against 0.20 for Argentina.
A final decided by attrition
For long stretches this was not a spectacle. Spain circulated the ball, worked the flanks, and won corner after corner. Argentina absorbed, fouled, and waited. Lionel Scaloni’s team collected six yellow cards on the night, and the discipline that had carried them through the tournament finally cracked in stoppage time when Fernández went into the book a second time.
Spain thought they had broken through earlier through Nico Williams, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Lamine Yamal, 18 and playing in the biggest match of his life, kept beating defenders on the right without a reward to show for it. Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain’s leading scorer at the tournament, was withdrawn on the hour as de la Fuente reached for something different.
What he found was Torres. The substitute had already been denied at close range by Martínez after a Yamal cross rescued from the byline. When the chance came again at the start of the second period of extra time, from roughly eight yards, he did not miss.
The end of an era for Messi
Argentina arrived in New Jersey attempting to become the first men’s side to string together four consecutive major titles, having won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024 on either side of the World Cup in Qatar. They leave without the trophy and, in all likelihood, without Messi. At 39, the captain played what appears to be the final World Cup match of his career, and it passed with Argentina unable to test the Spanish goalkeeper once.
Spain’s own path to the title was hardly imperious at the start. They opened the tournament with a draw against debutants Cape Verde, then grew into the competition, beating Belgium in the quarter-final and France in the semi-final before this. De la Fuente becomes the oldest manager to win the World Cup.
Why this one mattered in the Caribbean
The 2026 tournament was the first with a Caribbean debutant of this kind. Curaçao, with a population of just over 150,000, became the smallest nation ever to reach a men’s World Cup, topping a CONCACAF final-round group that contained Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Haiti also qualified.
Neither survived the group stage. Curaçao were beaten heavily by Germany, held Ecuador to a goalless draw, and lost to Côte d’Ivoire. Haiti lost all three. But the qualification itself reset what is considered possible for small island federations, and that is a conversation that runs directly through Kingstown. St Vincent and the Grenadines has never reached a World Cup finals. Curaçao has now shown what a smaller population than many CARICOM members can do with sustained investment, a diaspora recruitment strategy, and a professional coaching structure.
An expanded 48-team tournament also means more CONCACAF places on offer in 2030. The question for the SVG Football Federation is whether the domestic structure is being built to compete for one of them.
