NEW CHANDIGARH, India: West Indies beat India by five wickets in the third and final ODI on Saturday, completing their highest successful men’s One-Day International run chase. Captain Shai Hope led the pursuit with an unbeaten 162 at the PCA International Cricket Stadium.

Set 352 to win, West Indies reached 352/5 in 48.2 overs. Hope finished unbeaten on 162 off 143 balls, striking 17 fours and three sixes, and sealed the win by pushing a delivery from Naman Dhir to long-off for a single.

The chase surpassed West Indies’ previous highest winning total in an ODI run chase, 331/5 against Ireland in 2019, when they chased a target of 328. Hope’s 162 not out is also now the highest individual score by a West Indies batter in a successful ODI chase.

India still won the three-match series 2-1 after taking the first two games. But Saturday’s result denied the hosts a clean sweep and gave West Indies a historic finish to the ODI series.

India post 351

After winning the toss and electing to bat, India posted 351/7. KL Rahul led the way with an unbeaten 129, while Rohit Sharma added 92 to give the hosts what looked like a commanding total.

West Indies beat India after early setback

The West Indies chase began under pressure. Opener Jewel Andrew was unable to open the innings because of a finger injury, forcing a reshuffle at the top of the order.

Hope found a reliable partner in Amir Jangoo. The pair added 109 runs from 103 balls for the second wicket, with Jangoo scoring a brisk 67 off 56 balls before he was run out. From there, Hope held one end together as wickets fell around him, reaching his 21st ODI century off 104 balls.

With the required rate climbing late in the innings, Gudakesh Motie contributed an unbeaten 19 alongside his captain. West Indies were 323/5 after 47 overs, and Hope saw them home with 10 balls remaining.

Hope’s 162 not out is now the highest individual score by a West Indies batter in a successful ODI chase.

A series of big totals

The record chase capped a series in which the West Indies batting repeatedly delivered. In the second ODI in Guwahati, the visitors made 405/7, crossing 400 in an ODI for the first time, with centuries from John Campbell (101), Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114). India answered by chasing down 406, powered by captain Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 223, to clinch the series.

On Saturday, the roles were reversed, and it was the West Indies who chased down a mammoth target to end the ODI series on a high. The teams now move on to a five-match T20I series, beginning on October 6 in Lucknow.
