Captain Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican spin the visitors to victory, and Brandon King’s unbeaten 81 seals a 1-0 series lead.

West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first Test in Dhaka: Bangladesh 272 and 142, West Indies 245 and 170 for 2

The West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets on Saturday, October 31, in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. Chasing 170 on the fourth day, the visitors reached 170 for 2 in 35.1 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series with a day to spare.

How the West Indies beat Bangladesh after trailing on first innings

Bangladesh batted first and made 272. The West Indies replied with 245, built on 56 from Tagenarine Chanderpaul, 54 from John Campbell and an unbeaten 43 from Chase. Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan took four wickets to give the hosts a 27-run first-innings lead.

That lead did not last. Chase and left-arm spinner Warrican tore through the Bangladesh second innings on a pitch that offered plenty of turn. Chase took three wickets in ten balls late on day three, and Bangladesh closed on 79 for 6.

After a rain break on Saturday morning, the hosts were bowled out for 142. Nayeem top-scored with 52, his maiden Test half-century, after Chase dropped him twice. Chase eventually removed him to complete figures of 5 for 36, the fifth five-wicket haul of his Test career. Warrican took 4 for 63.

Brandon King’s 81 helps the West Indies beat Bangladesh

Campbell survived three lbw appeals from Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the only over before lunch. After the break, the openers took control. Campbell made 49 before he fell, and King finished unbeaten on 81, with Kavem Hodge not out on 31 at the other end. The West Indies scored at close to five runs an over to win comfortably.

Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam took the two Bangladesh wickets as the West Indies beat Bangladesh with more than a day to spare.

Warrican named Player of the Match

Warrican was named Player of the Match for his nine wickets in the game. He took 5 for 53 in the first innings and 4 for 63 in the second. Between them, Warrican and Chase did most of the damage in both Bangladesh innings.

Bangladesh also had an injury setback. Mominul Haque was hurt in the head while trying to take a catch at short leg during the West Indies first innings, and Jaker Ali came in as his replacement.

What it means after the West Indies beat Bangladesh

The result lifts the West Indies’ points percentage in the ICC World Test Championship from 20.83 to 26.92, according to SportsTak. This is the West Indies’ first Test tour of Bangladesh since 2021, when they won the two-match series 2-0. It also extends a strong October for the Caribbean side, who beat India in the second T20I earlier this month behind Shai Hope’s unbeaten 102.

The second and final Test begins on Thursday, November 5, at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. A draw or a win there would give the West Indies the series.
