Vincentian Star Shafiqua Maloney in Focus as Athletics Begins at Glasgow 2026
Athletics gets under way today at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, and St Vincent and the Grenadines carries a genuine medal hope onto the Scotstoun track in Shafiqua Maloney. The middle-distance runner, an Olympic 800m finalist and the country’s finest athlete, leads a five-strong Vincentian track team into six days of competition in Scotland, with her own showpiece, the women’s 800m final, set for Friday 31 July.
Maloney, 27 and from Richland Park, holds the national 800m record both indoors and outdoors and sits 11th in the world in the event on the current World Athletics rankings. She sharpened her outdoor national record to 1 minute 57.29 seconds in August 2025 and has continued to run at that level into 2026, form that puts her within reach of the podium in Glasgow.
Her breakthrough came at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she finished fourth in the women’s 800m final in 1:57.66, missing bronze by 0.24 of a second. In doing so she became the first athlete from St Vincent and the Grenadines to reach an Olympic final in any sport, having carried the national flag at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 opening ceremonies.
A strong field at Scotstoun
The women’s 800m in Glasgow is loaded. World champion Lilian Odira of Kenya and Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell headline the entries, while Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson is sitting the Games out. Athletics runs from today, Monday 27 July, to Saturday 1 August at Scotstoun Stadium, with the 800m decided over heats, semi-finals and Friday’s final. A place in that final would again put Maloney among the best two-lap runners in the world.
The official Glasgow 2026 channels have spotlighted her bid this week, framing the women’s 800m as one to watch. Her presence alone is a marker of how far Vincentian athletics has travelled: a decade ago the country had never reached a global final, and now it sends a ranked contender to a Commonwealth start line.

A journey built on resilience
Maloney’s rise has been anything but smooth. In the year before Paris she spoke openly about stretches of homelessness and hardship, competing without a sponsor while moving between temporary lodgings. “I wanted to quit,” she told Olympics.com of that period, before returning to the track and running her way into an Olympic final. That story has made her a role model for young athletes across the Caribbean.
Teammate Handal Roban lines up in the men’s 800m, an event he also contested at Paris 2024, while McKish Compton (100m), Uroy Ryan (long jump) and Amal Glasgow (400m) complete the track team, backed by swimmers Alexander Joachim, Matthew Ballah and Kennice Greene. After Glasgow, Maloney and Amal Glasgow are due to travel on to the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo.
As the women’s 800m unfolds this week, Vincentians at home and across the diaspora will be watching closely. A strong run from Maloney would add another chapter to a national athletics story that she has done more than anyone to write.
