Burkina Faso’s military government announced on Friday, June 26, 2026, that it has severed all diplomatic relations with France, its former colonial ruler, with immediate effect. The declaration was read live on national television by Communications Minister Pingdwende Gilbert Ouedraogo, marking one of the most dramatic ruptures in West African-French relations in the post-independence era.

The government communique, issued from the Primature in Ouagadougou, stated that the conditions necessary for relations grounded in mutual respect, reciprocal trust, non-interference in internal affairs, and national sovereignty “are no longer met.” The junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traore who came to power through a September 2022 coup, has for years accused France of working against Burkina Faso’s national interests.

In its formal statement, Burkina Faso accused France of “incessant activism” against the country’s interests, “openly displayed neocolonial ambitions,” and providing “active support to subversive networks and terrorists” destabilising the Sahel. France denied the accusations. The French Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Pascal Confavreux described the decision as “hostile and unfounded,” adding that it “illustrates the worrying drift of the Burkinabe authorities.” Paris said it was reviewing reciprocal measures and urged French nationals in Burkina Faso to exercise heightened vigilance.

The Traore government was careful to separate the official rupture from cultural and social ties between the peoples of the two countries. The communique stated that the break “does not call into question the historical, human, cultural and social ties that unite the Burkinabe and French peoples,” and that French nationals in Burkina Faso would continue to be protected under law.

Burkina Faso joins Mali and Niger, both governed by military juntas, in expelling French diplomatic and military presence. The three countries, all members of the Alliance of Sahel States formed in 2023, have collectively pivoted away from France toward Russia and other non-Western partners. The broader shift has reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the Sahel at a moment when the region remains severely destabilised by jihadist insurgencies linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

Human rights organisations have sharply criticised Traore’s government in parallel. Human Rights Watch, in findings published earlier this year, accused Burkina Faso’s military forces of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the ethnic cleansing of Fulani civilians. The government in Ouagadougou has rejected those findings.

It remained unclear on Saturday how the French embassy in Ouagadougou would be affected by the formal severance or what timeline, if any, had been set for the withdrawal of diplomatic personnel. The international community had not issued a coordinated response as of this report.
