Barclays to Eliminate 5,000 Jobs by Year-End as AI Reshapes Banking Operations

Barclays job cuts will total around 5,000 positions, or roughly 5 percent of the British bank’s global workforce, in 2026 as it expands the use of artificial intelligence and other technology to simplify operations and reduce costs.

The bank said 1,000 positions had already been eliminated, with another 4,000 expected to go by the end of the year. Most of the reductions affect operational and functional roles, and about 60 percent are in support functions, including developers. The UK retail banking business accounts for the largest share of the changes, although investment banking operations are also affected. Barclays employed approximately 93,000 people worldwide at the end of 2025.

Technology Investment and AI

The workforce reductions are part of a longer-running modernization and cost-cutting program. Group Chief Executive C. S. Venkatakrishnan said investments made in technology over several years were helping Barclays simplify and improve its business.

He described AI as the “icing on the cake, not the cake,” emphasizing that the bank first needs the technological infrastructure to capture its benefits. AI already has an important role, he said, and could become more significant in the future.

Group Finance Director Anna Cross said technology and process changes are making employees more productive. She also noted that Barclays UK had taken more structural cost actions than initially planned for 2026.

Profits Rise While Barclays Cuts Jobs

Barclays reported third-quarter pre-tax profit of approximately £2.3 billion, a 12 percent increase from the same period a year earlier. The result nevertheless missed analysts’ expectations, with weaker fixed-income trading contributing to the shortfall.

Alongside the job-cut announcement, Barclays unveiled a £500 million share buyback. The bank recorded approximately £201 million in structural cost actions during the quarter and indicated that further measures would follow before the end of 2026.

The Barclays job cuts are proceeding even as the bank reports higher profits and announces a £500 million share buyback. Together, those developments highlight how large banks are seeking to improve returns through technology even when their businesses remain profitable.

What the Barclays Job Cuts Signal

Other major banks have also been assessing how automation and AI may change staffing needs. Coding, administrative processing and other routine support tasks are among the early areas where the technology is affecting decisions about hiring and job design. For another side of the AI employment debate, Vincypowa News has examined claims about trade jobs created by the AI infrastructure boom and the limits of that hiring.

Barclays has framed its approach as creating capacity for further investment through a simpler and more productive organization, rather than as a cost reduction effort alone. Its statements do not establish that AI directly replaced every position being eliminated; the reductions are part of a broader restructuring program.

The precise impact on individual locations and employees, and the longer-term balance between technological efficiency and employment, will become clearer as the remaining planned reductions are carried out.
