Apple Unveils iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable Phone, Starting at $1,999
Apple has finally put a foldable iPhone on stage. At its “Surprise and shine” event in Cupertino on Wednesday, the company introduced iPhone Duo, a book-style phone that opens into what Apple calls its largest iPhone display ever, in a strikingly thin foldable design.
The inner screen is 7.6 inches, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the display on the new iPhone 18 Pro Max and 80 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro. Marketing chief Greg Joswiak made the comparison on stage, and it matches Apple’s published specifications.
The device is the first major handset launched under new chief executive John Ternus, and this was his first keynote after taking over from Tim Cook earlier this month. It arrives more than seven years after Samsung shipped the first Galaxy Fold, and in a category that still accounts for only a sliver of global smartphone sales. Apple is betting it can make the form factor mainstream by treating it as an iPhone that becomes a small tablet, not a science-project gadget.
What it is
Closed, iPhone Duo is passport-sized, with a 5.4-inch outer display. Opened, it becomes a wide 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR canvas meant for video, games, Split View multitasking, and, later this year, Apple Pencil. Both screens share the same aspect ratio, so apps and films do not jump into a different shape when the hinge moves. Apple hid the inner FaceTime camera under the display. Unlocking is Touch ID in the side button, plus Apple Watch. There is no Dynamic Island and no Face ID system as iPhone buyers know it. The phone is eSIM-only worldwide.
The frame is polished grade 5 titanium. Ceramic Shield covers the back, and Ceramic Shield 2 covers the front with what Apple says is three times better scratch resistance. Apple gave it an IP68 dust and water rating, a claim early foldables could not honestly make. Colors are Star White and Night Sky. A custom hinge with more than 100 precision parts is supposed to hold the inner panel flat. Apple added a nano-texture finish to cut glare and make the crease less obvious. Whether that crease disappears in daily use is the question every review will answer in October.
Power, cameras, battery
Inside is the A20 Pro chip, with a display engine built to drive both screens at once, plus Apple’s C2 cellular modem. The camera deck is dual 48-megapixel, a Fusion main lens with 2x optical zoom and a Fusion Ultra Wide. Video goes to 4K at 120 frames per second. The outer front camera is a 12-megapixel Center Stage unit. FaceTime can use both the inner and outer cameras at once, so a caller can see your face and what you are pointing at.
There is a battery in each half. Apple’s numbers:
- Up to 31 hours of video on the inner display
- Up to 44 hours of video on the outer display
- Up to 24 hours when both screens are used about equally
- Fast charge to 50 percent in about 20 minutes on a wire, or about 30 minutes wireless
Those are lab claims. Foldables have historically been the first phones to fade when the second screen stays on.
Price and when you can buy it
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States for 256GB. Storage runs to 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, with the top configuration reaching $3,199. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16. Units go on sale Friday, October 23 in the United States and more than 70 other countries and regions. A second group of 28 countries and regions follows on October 30. Apple also showed a two-part case at $79 and a Folio with kickstand at $129.
For the first time, Apple is also letting customers lease a new iPhone rather than buy it outright, alongside 0 percent financing and trade-in credit. The move landed the same day the company raised prices across the new lineup, and it is aimed squarely at softening a $1,999 sticker.
It is a luxury product on day one, not a mass-market replacement for the phone in most pockets.
That price puts Duo above most flagship iPhones and in the same neighborhood as Samsung’s latest wide foldables.
Why Apple waited, and why it matters
Samsung, Google, Motorola, Xiaomi, Honor, and others have sold folding phones for years. The market stayed small because hinges failed, screens creased, software felt split in two, and prices stayed high. Apple waited until it could sell a titanium, water-resistant device with iPad-style software and an iPhone camera system. Analysts already say Apple could take a large share of foldable shipments by year’s end simply because the logo is on the hinge. That would revive a category that has been shrinking, not because the idea is new, but because a late giant just blessed it.
The catch is the same one that follows every first-generation Apple hardware leap. The software has to feel native when the phone is a tall slab and when it is a small tablet. The crease has to survive a year of sand, keys, and tropical humidity. Repair cost will decide whether this is a daily phone or a $2,000 curiosity. Apple has not published a Caribbean price list in the first announcement. Import duty and carrier markups will set the real number for buyers in the region.
iPhone Duo is not a rumor anymore. It is a $1,999 foldable with the largest screen Apple has ever put on a phone, a new CEO’s first flagship, and a test of whether the company that made the slab inescapable can now convince people to bend it.
